Michigan’s weather this week: It certainly won’t be a roaster

Jul 12, 2023Jul 12, 2023

Early August can be very hot. This week will have great comfortable summer heat, but it won’t be a roaster. We have a few periods of rain in the forecast, but it won’t be a washout week either.

It’s going to be at least five days with the weather not being a huge topic, other than it being very nice.

To start we better get a grip on what is “normal” for early August. The average high temperature is starting to slowly slip lower. Below is the average high temperature for August 9.

Long-term average high temperature for August 9.

For the southern half of Lower Michigan we normally expect gorgeous summer warmth between 80 degrees and 83 degrees. Northern Lower Michigan is just a touch cooler with typical high temperatures between 77 degrees and 80 degrees. The Upper Peninsula starts to get a hint of early fall at this time of year with afternoon temperatures in the mid-70s.

Here’s the high temperature forecast this week.

High temperature forecast from today, August 7 to Friday, August 11

Today will be the coolest day with most afternoon temperatures topping out in the 70s. Tuesday is a couple of degrees warmer and around 81 degrees for most of Lower Michigan. Wednesday will be the warmest day with high temperatures around 83 degrees. Thursday is a touch cooler in the north and still in the low-80s in the south. Friday should be warm and turning humid ahead of a weather system.

So we can’t complain at all about this week’s temperatures- unless you want it hot, hot, hot.

Rainfall will be something you’ll want to pay attention to if you have an outdoor project going or want to have some more summer fun. The only high chance of rain comes late in the week for late Friday or early Saturday. The exact timing won’t be pinned down until late Wednesday. But there will be a few other patches of showers this week. Below is the rain forecast for every six hours through Friday night.

Rain areas forecast in six-hour increments from this afternoon through 2 a.m. Saturday.

Today will now have only a few light showers. Tuesday should be dry for most with just a quick, stray shower across southern Lower Michigan. Wednesday is probably the best day if you are looking for sun and warmth. A double storm system will be rolling through the Great Lakes Wednesday night into Thursday, but Michigan may miss the rain. Right now the two pieces of the storm system look to stay separated with one moving north of Michigan and one south of Michigan. I’d watch for detail updates on late Wednesday weather over the next few days. Sometime late Friday, Friday night or early Saturday is our only valid chance of rain and storms this week.

With Michigan being under the fast moving jetstream and storm track right now, stay updated with each day’s weather here. I’ve given you the big picture of the weather this week, but you’ll want each day’s forecast the night before or early each morning.
